Empathic Magic

Empathic Magic

There is an ancient magical art by which magical items are granted an empathic ability. In its simplest form this magic allows an item to sense it wielder’s will. Thus magical items may act in accord with the way the bearer wishes. A wand may cast its spell when the bearer gives a mental command or a sword might illuminate at will. With only a bit more effort, though, and Empathic Enchanter puts a bit of his own mentality into the magical item, and the item gains the ability to actually make simple choices based on the bearer’s need. For example, a magical rope may unbind itself when the user is done climbing it, or a sword might enact its resistance to fire power a hair of a moment before the fiery breath of a dragon engulf’s the bearer (who may not have had time to enact the power himself). There are more powerful forms of Empathic Magic, however, and more dangerous. Some items are given sentience with this form of magic, allowing them to think freely and even make educated decisions. The more “sentient” they become the more free-willed they become and they develop emotions and personality. In its greatest emulation Empathic Magic literally places a whole persona into an item and it can actually force its will upon its bearer. These are called Intelligent Items and are detailed in the DMG.
