Stone Lore

Stone Lore is an ancient art founded by five of the Ardruvar, who learned their secrets from Lohar and took their power from the remains of Galur. Though in time all five of these ancient masters would die at the hands of their foe, they left their mighty knowledge and power behind, hidden within the earth. Now, thousands of years later, the Duervar have begun to unearth these ancient secrets and a new order has arisen of men and women seeking to rediscover this lost art. They call themselves Stone Casters.

The Secret of Stone Casting is in the hands. For, as Lohar told them, the hand is a gift from Aminus, given to the Elder Gods. There is power in five, and thus each hand has five fingers. These fingers are the tools of the Stone Caster and great masters will need no metal objects between them and the stone they craft. Stone Casters learn to forge gems with their bare hands and can imbue mighty power through their touch. They can speak with the spirits of the earth through their palms of their hands. Their fingers can extract arcane power from one stone and put it into another.

Stone Casters become one with the stone, fusing their bodies with it. Eventually their bodies turn dark as rock and their eyes take upon the brilliant sheen of gemstones (ie dark grey skin and sapphire eyes). How exactly their appearance changes can be influenced by the particular stones they work with the most (ie: White Marble may give marbled skin, while black diamonds may result in black diamond eyes).

In the age before the Ice, when the Titans warred for dominion of the world there were many duervan gods. The Ardruvar they were called; 100 mighty warriors who were neither immortal like their creators nor mortal like their children. Eternal were they, but they could be slain, and in their war that raged for over a thousands years almost all of them were. One of their greatest battles, it is told, was against the Elder Titan called Galur, Lord of the Quaking Earth. Galur resided at the very heart of the world and so great was his power over the earth that oft he destroyed the fortresses of the Ardruvar with great shakings and heavings. The Ardruvar delved deep into the earth, seeking out this mighty foe, but he was unreachable. It was then, though, that one of his very own turned against him. Lohar the Steadfast grew weary of his father's destruction. For in devastating the Duervar so too did Galur destroy Lohar's creations; the mighty mountains and crags where the earth and air meet. What more, his own children, the Mountain Giants, were being killed by these earth quakes as well. So it was that when the Ardruvar came upon Lohar with the intent of slaying him he instead offered them a truce. In exchange for a peace between these two races, he would aid them in reaching Galur. If they would spare him and destroy Galur then he in turn would teach them the secrets of stone, a power the likes of which they had never known. Though they distrusted the Titan, they agreed to his terms and Lohar used his own command of the earth to secret them through his caverns to the home of his father. The Ardruvar assailed Galur where he lay, but the Elder Titan was far too great for them. Many died, and Lohar realized that his hope would die with them; thus Lohar joined the battle, and aided in the destruction of Galur, completing his betrayal. When the battle ended Galur's blood mingled with that of the fallen Adruvar and sank into the earth, filling it with precious ores.
Lohar kept his promise and five of the keenest minded of the Ardruvar agreed to go with him and learn his secrets. No one knows how long Lohar apprenticed them, but when they returned these five were greatly changed. It is said they were one with the stone, knowing its secrets and communing with the earth spirits. They even appeared different, having attained the attributes of stone. They were called the Stone Lords. Many years later, when the Titans were defeated and the Duervar were born some were selected from amongst these mortals to be taught the secrets of the Stone Lords. Their apprentices they named Stone Casters, and as the Duervan Empire expanded so too did their knowledge and power. In the depths of the earth they secreted away much of their knowledge and few were privy to it. It is said they crafted the Karn'Furnaces, in places where the blood of the Ardruvar had granted the stone great power. They helped craft mighty magical weapons to grant the Duervar the power to slay Titans, and were even said to have crafted mighty magical rings, set with the most precious of stones and enchanted with extraordinary power. The Stone Casters were few, though, and doom would inevitably reach them. Olginthoth rose to power, and his Ice Titans and Frost Giants spread across the earth. His glaciers sundered the mountains and devestated the empire. Thus the Stone Lords went forth to battle these foes, with the Stone Casters at their sides, but they underestimated the power of their foe and all were defeated. Their secrets were lost with their deaths, and soon The Age of Ice set in. The mountains crumbled, the ancient halls were overwhelmed by the foe, and the greatest of the Karn'Furnaces were lost. Eventually the Stone Casters became a legendary, nearly mythical, order and were revered only in songs and history books. It was nearly four thousand years before Magmodin himself came upon the mortal world to battle Olginthoth, trapping him in his own icy lair, slaying the Ice Titans, and driving the Frost Giants to the corners of the earth. But the Duervan Empire was destroyed and the secrets of the Stone Lords lost with it.

It is said that as Galur died, his blood mingled with that of the Ardruvar he had slain and flowed into the heart of the world. The Stone Lords harnessed this power, and using their connection to the stone they cast their great arcane knowledge out into the earth before they died, binding it to the crystals of the depths. Only those gifted the power to speak with these ancient stones can awaken their sentience and reveal the power within, granting them access to the secrets of the world.

When Olginthoth was defeated and the Age of Ice came to an end, Kulderak called upon the Duervar to seek out these places of power, in attempt to recover the lost knowledge of the Stone Lords. Eventually a secretive order formed of those who sought out and mastered this arcane power. Though many sacred halls still remain, and some of the Karn’Furnaces still burn, most remain lost. The ancient order of Stone Casters is returning, though they have forgotten and lost most of their secrets. There are a few who quest to recover their lost knowledge and face many grave dangers in doing so.

Stone Caster Prestige Class

Wandering the mountains, caverns and depths of the earth, the Stone Caster seeks out the ancient rites of Stone Lore long ago lost to the Duervan people. The Stone Caster is either lost in study of ancient etchings and runes, or zealously leading the party to seek out long lost catacombs and legendary reliquaries. While some Stone Casters content themselves with sedentary lives as historians pouring over ancient texts, the true Stone Caster answers a deeper, nearly fanatical, calling.

Rather than cast magic like a typical spellcaster, the Stone Caster imbues himself with the spirit and materia of the earth, causing blood and flesh to take on an earthen form. From this connection he is able to draw upon significant powers. Beyond this the Lore Secrets of Stone Lore are primarily used to grant stone and metal objects additional arcane powers.

The ancient secret of Stone Lore is the one most prominently pursued by the Duervar. Some wish to master its powers and as such devote themselves to it. Others wish only to use this Lore to enhance their power in battle, and as such only dabble in these powers. As such the Stone Caster prestige class is designed for both warriors and those who are already spell casters. Each will find their own use for these abilities and choose those Lore Secrets which best suit them. Some will seek to earn all levels while others will be satisfied with only a few levels in this class.

Role: The Stone Casters are often warriors and priests of earth gods who seek to unearth the lores of their ancient people and use them to enhance their own powers. Their magic involves channeling elemental earth energies into themselves, controlling the earth around them, and imbuing their metal and stone weapons and armor with arcane power. The first act of becoming a Stone Caster is absorbing a vast amount of stone into his bloodstream to increase his power to channel and commune with the earth. The Stone Caster is always seeking to discover ancient lores, and their connection to the earth often makes them seem distant and aloof. Amongst their own kind this extreme convergence with the elemental forces makes them distrusted and yet respected at the same time. In an adventuring group they are often able to call upon some unique power to aid them in unique situations and yet also prove to be amongst the toughest of warriors.
Alignment: Stone Casters can be of any alignment except chaotic, as harnessing the powers of the stone requires an orderly mind.
Hit Dice: d10.
To qualify to become a Stone Caster, a character must fulfill all of the following criteria.
Race: Duervar
Base Attack Bonus: +5.
Special: The character must undergo an arduous ritual, see details below. What more the character must have both hands and all ten fingers and cannot wear any gloves or gauntlets when performing any Stone Caster abilities.
Skills: Craft (stone) 3 ranks, Speak Terran
Feats: Endurance

The Stone Caster’s class skills are Appraise, Climb, Craft (stone or metal), Knowledge (dungeoneering), Knowledge (engineering), Knowledge (geography), Knowledge (history), Knowledge (religion), Perception, Profession, Survival.

The following are the class features of the Stone Caster prestige class
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A Stone Caster gains no additional proficiency with any weapons or armor.
Expanded Duervan Natural Abilities: All Duervar have an affinity with the earth (Stonecunning), but the Stone Caster's bond with the earth expands these extraordinarily (Depth Sense, Extended Stonecunning, Improved Stonecunning).
Earth Blood: A Stone Caster's bond to the earth grants him spell-like-abilities every odd level.
Damage Reduction: The Stone Caster's bond to the earth also grants him hardened flesh that reduces the damage he takes from attacks.

Stone Caster Earth Binding Ritual:
The Earth Binding Ritual infuses the Stone Casters' blood with that of both Galur and the ancient Ardruvar who died battling him. When their bloods mingled and entered the earth they created all the great streams and veins of metal ore that run through it. All Galur's power was mingled with the earth and this ritual binds the Stone Caster's flesh and soul to the element of earth. As such, the Stone Caster attains many spell-like and extraordinary abilities. Undergoing this ritual causes the stone caster to take on the “earth subtype”. He now senses the spirit of the stone and call upon it to aid him. He only need place his bare hands upon the earth and concentrate to commune with the earth.

Earth Subtype: The Stone Caster gains the following abilities upon completion of this ritual and these increase every odd level:

Burrow (Ex): The Stone Caster can dig with his hands into loose earth and in response it will give way easily, parting for him. This allows him to burrow at a speed of 10. He cannot dig through solid stone (see other abilities later for this power).

Tremorsense (Ex): By placing his bare hands or feet upon stone or earth (worked or natural) the Stone Caster can sense movement within 30’ almost as clearly as seeing it with his own eyes.

Depth Sense (Ex): The Stone Caster is able determine his approximate elevation or depth by standing still for a single round. This is a move equivalent action. For the next ten minutes thereafter, the Stone Caster is also able to sense if he is ascending or descending.

Extended Stonecunning (Ex): The Stone Caster's connection with the element of earth, the spirit of the stone, gives him increased awareness of the thought processes of earth creatures. His stonecunning ability extends its bonus to all on Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks made to recognize or influence creatures of the Earth subtype. Knowledge checks for such creatures may be made untrained. ¹

Improved Stonecunning (Ex): Starting at 3rd level the Stone Caster’s Stonecunning bonus improves by +1, including effects covered by extended stonecunning. This bonus improves by a further +1 at levels 7 and 10.¹

Caster Level (Ex): The Stone Caster adds his levels in this prestige class to his caster level for all spells he casts with the earth descriptor, arcane or divine.

Damage Reduction (Ex): At 1st level, a Stone Caster gains DR 1/—. At 5th level, this DR increases to 2/—, and at 9th level it increases to 3/—. Damage reduction from different sources does not stack; except those from classes which provide DR (such as the Barbarian).

Earth Blood (Sp): The Stone Caster’s connection to the earth combined with his arcane knowledge also grants access to many spell-like-abilities. Using these abilities is a standard action unless otherwise stated, and they always use the Stone Caster class level as the caster level. The Stone Caster may select one of the following abilities at every odd level (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th). By 10th level the Stone Caster will have only five of these abilities, so he should choose wisely. The Stone Caster can use these abilities (3+con mod) times per day. Some abilities take more than one “Earth Blood use”.
• Stone Mend (Sp): The Stone Caster can absorb minerals into his body to heal himself. As long as the Stone Caster is in contact with natural stone he can take a swift action to heal himself (and only himself). This functions as the Cure Light Wounds spell but self only.
• Stone Shape (Sp): The Stone Caster can manipulate the stone around him. This functions as the spell Stone Shape.
• Stone Walk (Sp): The Stone Caster can actually become part of the earth, and travel through it. This functions as the Meld Into Stone spell.
• Stone Tell (Sp): The Stone Caster can actually communicate with the earth. This functions as the Stone Tell spell.
• Stone Skin (Sp): The Stone Caster can cause the earth to cling to his flesh giving him hardened skin. This functions as the Stoneskin spell, but the material component is eschewed. This ability takes 2 Earth Blood uses to perform.
• Stone Magic (Sp): The Stone Caster is able to cast earth based spells at their maximum potential. This functions as the Maximize Spell feat, but can only work on spells with the earth descriptor. This ability can only be applied to spells of 4th level or less, but does not increase the level of the spell. This ability takes 3 Earth Blood uses to perform.
• Stone Might (Sp): By placing at least one hand upon the earth (stone or dirt), the Stone Caster can draw strength from it. Thereafter he gains a +4 to strength for the duration of the effect. This functions as the Bull's Strength spell.
• Earthquake (Sp): The Stone Caster can cause the earth to quake. This functions as the Earthquake spell.
• Stone Grip (Sp): The Stone Caster can, by touching the ground another creature is standing on, cause that creature to be held to the earth. This functions as the Hold Monster spell except that the Stone Caster and the target must both be touching the same piece of earth.
• Stone Hold (Sp): The Stone Caster can cause the earth to impede the movement of his enemies. This functions as the Slow spell except that, after being affected, the targets must be touching the earth for the spell to be effective. This ability takes 2 Earth Blood uses to perform.

Stone Lore (Sp): Stone Casters have learned ancient arcane secrets of communing with the Spirits of the Stone, to summon them in times of need and to infuse weapons and armor with their aspects. There are many other secrets yet to be learned. The Stone Caster begins with the "Enhance Metal Objects" Lore Secret at 1st level, then can learn a new Lore Secret at each even level from those listed below or from any others he has learned in his explorations and studies. Or, he may save the slot for later use when new Lore Secrets do become available. Using this ability is a standard action and the Stone Caster can use these abilities each once per day, plus one additional time per day for every four levels, to a total of three times per day at 8th level. The bonus and properties granted by these cannot be changed until the duration of the power expires.

• Enhance Metals (Su): A Stone Caster's first Lore Secret is the ability to grant an enhancement bonus to any weapon, armor or piece of equipment made of metal (or stone) for 1 minute per Stone Caster level. At 1st level this is a +1 enhancement bonus, and for every three class levels this increases by +1 (+2 at 4th, +3 at 7th, and +4 at 10th). These bonuses can be added to the weapon, stacking with existing weapon bonuses to a maximum of +5, but the character cannot raise the base enhancement of any magical item more than one higher than his level allows (ie a 7th level Stone Caster could raise a +1 weapon to +4, but could not raise a +2 weapon to +5, he would have to be 10th level to do that).

• Channel Arcane Energy (Su): The Stone Caster can channel unique arcane properties into his weapon. The Stone Caster must know the stone with the appropriate affinity to that particular energy type and then must imbue that item with that stone, whereby the item takes on those properties. A stone's value is a reflection of its purity and rarity and as such it is an indicator of how often a stone can be used before it is consumed. Each +1 enhancement bonus (Price Bonus) worth of abilities consumes 100gp worth of a gemstone's value. Stones of lesser value are usually immediately consumed in the process, but more valuable stones can channel this power multiple times before being exhausted. The Stone Caster may find or purchase these rare stones and some are not easy to find. Adding these properties takes an amount of Enhance Metals bonus equal to the property's "Price Bonus" (see Table: Melee Weapon Special Abilities). These bonuses are added to any properties the weapon already has, but duplicate abilities do not stack. If the weapon is not magical, at least a +1 enhancement bonus must be added before any of these properties can be added. These bonuses apply to only one end of a double weapon. These properties last for 1 minute per Stone Caster level.

• Deep Earth Sensing (Su): The Stone Caster can send out waves of sonic waves and feel the vibrations that they create to make a mental map of the surrounding earth. In this way he can detect caverns, areas of week earth, buried structures, and water beneath the earth.

• Excavate (Su): The Stone Caster is able to cause large amounts of earth to move. This will not break hard stone, though. The excavatation process is slow but powerful.

• Create Cavern (Su): By methods of complex observation and analysis a Stone Caster can determine the best way for the earth to move and change to cause caverns to form. Then, through communing with Earth Spirits, he can cause caverns to begin to form. Caverns can only be formed in areas of hard rock. The development of these caverns takes time, but they are permanent.

• Conduction (Su): The Stonecaster learns the conductivity of earth and metals and is able to enhance the natural electrical energies running through the earth. By doing so he can summon small amounts of electrical energy that build up in his hands or pass into other metal objects that he is holding or touches.

• Detect Precious Metals (Su): By emitting both sonic and electrical impulses into the earth and sensing the vibrations and energies they make the stonecaster is able to sense precious metals beneath the earth. These metals must be in contact with the earth, so buried, not just locked in a chest.

• Control Earth Elementals (Su): Through is communion with earth spirits the Stone caster can assert control over earth elementals.

• Summon Earth Elementals (Su): The Stone Caster is able to summon a guardian from the element of earth. This functions as the Summon Monster (Earth Elemental) spell and can be used 1/day. The size of the elemental is based on class level: 1st- Small; 4th- Medium, 7th- Large, 10th- Huge. This ability takes 3 Earth Blood uses to perform.

• Magnetism (Su): Some metals are naturally magnetic (iron, nickel, cobalt); but almost any metal can be magnetized when electricity runs through it. The Stone Caster can create, enhance, reduce or cancel the magentism of any metal. Used with precision this can become a powerful ability.

• Radiation (Su):

• Earth Sunder (Su): One of the great secrets of the titans was the power of tectonic movements. Miniscule shifts in the depths of the earth can cause incredible effects upon the surface. The Stone Caster has learned how to manipulate the earth enough to cause specific effects in specific places. The following abilities are learned over time:

** Volcanism (Su): Deep in the earth the pressure of the weight of the earth causes the rock to melt into magma. Drawing upon this power the StoneCaster pulls magma up from the depths of the earth and causes lava to erupt.

** Raise Hills (Su): By welling up the earth beneath the surface hills can be formed.

** Raze Hills (Su): By stretching out the earth beneath the surface hills can be flattened.

** Sinkhole (Su): By drawing down the earth beneath the surface the ground can give way creating a trap (consider making this an aspect of excavate).

** Raise Mountain (Su): By combining volcanic and tectonic power the earth can rise up and force a mountain to form.

** Raze Mountain (Su): By sundering the earth or even shifting tectonics the StoneCaster is able to bring even might mountains crumbling down.

** Crevice (Su):By sundering the earth along a specific fault a Stonecaster can cause a great crevice to form.

• Earthquake (Su): By creating a deep, deep movement in the earth, an earthquake can be caused.

• Stone Construction: The Stone Caster has learned to magically do what it normally takes most duervar hundreds of years to do, construct walls, floor, ceilings and even whole buildings.

• Stone Armor (Su): The Stone Caster has learned the ancient art of turning stone into armor.

• Earthen Constructs (Create Clay Golemn) (Su): the Stonecaster has learned the secrets to crafting Clay Golems.
