The Call Of Gelthena

Gelvani do not die of old age as most creatures do, being the possessors of Eternal Souls. Rather, upon reaching a certain age, or having attained a level of enlightenment ("life-completion", if you will), they will hear an inward calling from their creator deity, Gelthena, to ascend to Aelvanis and join with their gods and ancestors.

Refusal to heed the Call can be traumatic for an elf. Their existence on the mortal plane becomes increasingly debilitating (aging penalties are introduced), and eventually the Call will end, along with their chance to access paradise.
